CASE STUDY:

Bringing Zen

Kokeena brings the Zen to a modern kitchen

Background.

An Oregon homeowner wanted to create a timeless, Zen-feel modern kitchen using subtle neutrals with Rift White Oak, soapstone counters, and a sink. At the same time, they wanted to maximize storage to create an ultra-usable space. Though Ikea cabinets gave them the functionality they needed, they wanted a more stylish option without blowing their budget. The project was an entire replacement of all cabinets, island, sink, and appliances. They moved a washer and dryer and added a window to create the space for the centerpiece of the project:  the nook.

Challenges.

Not surprisingly, COVID challenges made the project frustrating in many respects. IKEA (like most suppliers) had supply chain logistics challenges that meant it took seven months to acquire all 22 cabinets. Fortunately, Kokeena was right on schedule without a glitch.

Results.

The homeowner loved the subtle, natural look of the Rift White Oak. The tight pattern looked almost like bamboo and gave them the Zen modern feel they were looking for, with not too much yellow and just the right amount of soft pinkish glow. Kokeena provided the unique and subtle texture they wanted with a natural grain that was just enough without being overwhelming.

The new window bathes the room and nook with light and just begs you to sit with a hot tea and enjoy the views of the Japanese garden outside.
